"SemI40" project strengthens European economy by relying on "learning factory"

On June 7, 2016, Munich, Germany and Villach, Austria – SemI40 (“Power Semiconductor and Electronics Manufacturing 4.0”), a research project undertaken by the Infineon Austrian plant, was launched recently. In this project, 37 partners from 5 countries will cooperate in research to further develop automated plants. Its common goal is to enter a new phase of industrial 4.0 application development. The research project has a budget of up to 62 million euros and is one of the largest industrial 4.0 projects in Europe.

Sabine Herlitschka, CEO of the Infineon Austrian plant, said: “The project will make a significant contribution to improving production and securing jobs in Europe, which will help strengthen the corporate status and technological advantages of EU countries. Through this cross-border cooperation plan All partners will profit and bring a lot of competitive advantages.” As a pioneer in the development of Austrian Industry 4.0, Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) will contribute a lot of expertise to the project. The Pilot Room Industry 4.0 in Villach, Austria, provides the ideal environment for trying new manufacturing processes in actual production.

Focus on two aspects of "Made in Europe"

In the next three years, SemI40 will focus on “smart manufacturing” and “network physical production systems”, in which the communication security of data and materials plays a key role both inside and outside the factory. In this regard, the goal of the project is to develop relevant processes to ensure secure communication between global networked systems. The characteristics of these systems vary, for example, in terms of age, operating system, or interface. Secure communication systems can identify the risks posed by malware as early as possible, thus significantly reducing their potential impact on production.

Another important point is the development of dynamic simulation systems. This allows for more precise and efficient planning of production while improving or improving quality, capacity utilization and production cycles.

Decisions in the production process are often based on routine decisions of fixed models. Future systems are better able to make these decisions on their own – auto-complete and achieve a constant level of quality. In this way, the operator does not need to perform these routine tasks in a time-consuming manner, but has more time to complete complex tasks.

The factory must not only be self-study at any time, but also needs to be highly adaptable – it must be able to make adjustments to changes in all aspects of the supply chain faster, and the production process must be more flexible to adapt to configuration, logistics or customer orders. The change. Overall, this will save energy and increase resource efficiency.

Social impact on future work

SemI 4.0 will also examine the social impact of Industry 4.0 on future work: In the long run, Industry 4.0 will change the job function and qualification requirements of employees. Now you need to consider the requirements of Industry 4.0 for future jobs. This means that the system's work tasks are getting heavier and heavier, and there is a need for training and qualification measures that reflect changes in production processes. With the further development of Industry 4.0, SemI40 will help ensure more than 20,000 jobs in the project partner's company. Project partners have a total of approximately 300,000 employees worldwide.

High-level representatives debut project start-up activities

To fully demonstrate the importance of the SemI40, project partners have participated in the project launch event at the Infineon Villach plant. Representatives of funding and policy development agencies include Willy Van Puymbroeck, Bert De Colvenaer, Michael Wiesmüller and Gaby Schaunig. Van Puymbroeck is the head of the European Commission's CONNECT Directorate, Bert De Colvenaer is the Executive Director of the ECSEL Joint Venture, Michael Wiesmüller is the Head of Information and Industrial Technology and Space Travel for the Austrian Ministry of Transport Innovation and Technology (BMVIT), Gaby Schaunig is Deputy Governor of Enton State.

As a public-private partnership research project, SemI4.0 will help enhance the international competitiveness of the European electronics industry. SemI4.0 has received investments from companies, participating national governments and ECSEL (European Electronic Components and Systems Leading Program) joint ventures. In addition to investment from companies, the SemI40 program sponsors include Austria (BMVIT), Germany, France, Italy and Portugal and ECSEL joint ventures. .

Another European research project in charge of Infineon

Another European research project “IoSense” (short for “sensor networking”), which was led by the Infineon Technologies Dresden plant, was launched in May 2016. The focus is on sensors and sensor systems for the Internet of Things. The companies involved in the research are providers of Industry 4.0 solutions. Infineon is addressing the major issues facing Industry 4.0 through the user-oriented project SemI40 and the provider-oriented project IoSense. By launching these innovative projects, Infineon demonstrates its determination to develop the European semiconductor manufacturing industry and its leadership in the European semiconductor industry.
