Google launched 360-degree and 3D video as early as 2015, and then in 2016 launched a YouTube VR application that supports 360-degree live streaming and spatial audio.
Google now announces that Youtube is working with the Daydream team to allow 360-degree video and VR video to perform better. Specifically, they hope that cooperation can bridge the gap between our perception of the naked eye and the visual content provided by current Internet devices.
The focus of their collaboration is to improve the projection method so that a 360-degree virtual world perspective can fit into the rectangular video surface that makes up our existing VR system. In the past, Google adopted the “EQ projection†method, which is easy to implement and easy to edit.
However, EQ projection also has some deficiencies. This method usually produces high-quality images at the top and bottom of the picture, but the picture quality is very low in the central area that is most easily perceived by the user. To solve this problem, the vertical pixels of the 3D image must be reduced. Another problem is that EQ projections can also cause problems when mapping real-world linear motion.
The team is looking to use projections on the cubic map to project 360-degree video. The cube map takes a sphere and turns it into a cube, and then the six faces of the cube are projected into a flat image. This method can't solve the problem caused by the change of pixel density when watching 3D video.
YouTube and Daydream use "equiangular cube maps" or EAC methods to solve these problems. Essentially, they use saturated maps to solve the problem of uneven pixel density. This process is very technical, the result is to ensure a higher picture quality in the middle of the screen, but also the best use of network bandwidth.
Improving the quality of these images can make VR more realistic in today's limited network conditions. This ultimately helps Youtube to better present 360-degree video and VR video to the user without consuming too much bandwidth.
