Apple is entering the medical field more deeply. The US Patent and Trademark Office's patent application documents recently revealed that Apple intends to introduce a new wearable health device that can be shaped into different accessories. For example, such devices can be designed in the form of watches, rings, brooches, and the like.
In addition, the patent describes that the wearer manually reads the data through the finger and then compares the data with the already stored data to calculate an accurate measurement. Earlier this week, it was reported that Apple is developing at least one new health tracking product. The product is said to collect health-related data such as heart rate, pulse and blood sugar.
Apple's patent documents show that this wearable device can be seen as the next generation of Apple Watch, which can serve as an ECG test heart rate, helping Apple enter the $148 billion medical device market. CCS Insight expects the market value of the wearables to increase to $25 billion by 2019.
Although companies such as Samsung, Sony and LG have launched smart watches ahead of Apple, Apple Watch has opened the curtain of wearable trends for connected devices. Although the iPhone is still Apple's main source of income, Apple is eager to introduce new products.
A ring or brooch with an ECG function may be a niche product, but it is the key to heart disease testing. Normally, ECG readings vary depending on the distance between the device and the heart, but Apple claims to have a calibration function in the patent that gives accurate heart readings regardless of where it is placed in the body.
